Multivariate Data Analysis (MVDA) – Web Course


Using the latest multivariate techniques, participants will learn how to interpret complex data quickly and confidently. Discover the secrets of overviewing data tables and also learn how to build robust predictive models that turn data into decisions. The course is composed of lectures, software demonstrations and computer exercises in software SIMCA®, based on real-life datasets. We always strive to deliver great training with focus on the participants and the learning capacity. To ensure a good training quality, the trainings are split over four sessions. One home exercise per session is included and it is expected that the course delegates work on each exercise outside the session time.


The objective of this course is to show how to convert data tables to robust and reliable models and figures that can be easily interpreted and overviewed. Multivariate modeling is a powerful tool used in research, development, production and quality control in diverse industries ranging from Pharma and Biotech to car and steel industry.


The course is intended for researchers, scientists and engineers working with collection and interpretation of data. Methods are general and usable in most fields, where the aim is to gain maximum information from the data. No prior knowledge of statistics is assumed.

Seminars are given in the language stated. In-depth discussion, course material and printed material are in English hence knowledge of English is required.

Session 3 (3.5h): Introduction to OPLS, Visualization

  • Introduction to Orthogonal Partial Least Squares, OPLS
  • Regression models. Prediction of responses Y from parameters X
  • Model diagnostics and validation of a PLS and an OPLS model
  • Software click-along demo
  • One home exercise

Session 4 (3.5h): OPLS Applications – how does OPLS bring value?

  • Discriminant Analysis
  • Spectroscopy/Multivariate calibration
  • Batch process modelling
  • Software click-along demo
  • One home exercise
  • Course debriefing and final Q&A



The electronic course material (course slides and exercises) and the SIMCA® course license will be sent out by email two weeks before the course starts. SIMCA® needs admin rights to be installed so please contact IT soonest. Sartorius cannot help you to install SIMCA®. We recommend you have two screens or one projector and one PC in order to follow the course and demos easily. However this is not required.
